Dr. Jon Woodson, last of Howard University and a 1996 Action Speaks panelist, reports that he recently finished “Carlo: Six Portraits of Carl Van Vechten” (2011).
Jon says about his character: “Carl Van Vechten is now justifiably known for his stylish and captivating photography of celebrated artists from many fields. In the 1920s Van Vechten was a best-selling novelist and a saloniste who knew everybody in modernist America and Europe. He initiated the Harlem Renaissance and the Harlem jazz craze. He was best friends with Gertrude Stein and Mabel Dodge Luhan. This one-man play examines his career and investigates the complex psychology of this overlooked and undervalued social and artistic pioneer.”
