Action Speaks is a lively, 17 year old topic-driven panel discussion/radio show framed by the theme “Underappreciated 20th Century Dates that Changed America.” Our presenting radio station is WGBH 89.7 Boston and we have been carried in over 250 markets throughout the United States since we began distributing our show in 2009. Action Speaks is produced by Providence, Rhode Island’s AS220 and we have been supported by the Rhode Island Humanities Council, Rhode Island based Businesses, Universities and Law Firms and in 2012 through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
For 17 years, Action Speaks has been committed to high quality, non-partisan, engaging and accessible discussion that uses the past to inform the present. Our panelists have included some of our nation’s leading scholars, artists, government officials and even a former baseball player and a well-known college basketball coach. What began as a way to enrich and to reinvigorate the intellectual commons of our State’s Capital City, has now, with the rise of digital media and through our own efforts at national distribution, evolved into a multi-platform opportunity to discover the layers of history that inform our present while creating a dialogue that demonstrates, dare we say it, just how ‘sexy’ a good conversation can be!
For our Fall 2013 season, the Action Speaks theme is Utopian/Dystopian, dates where traditional and idiosyncratic ideas for the transcendent meet the amplification of ‘everyday horrific’ in a battle for reality. As always, our Action Speaks season will offer great discussions, wonderful archival and contemporary interviews and music and most importantly….surprise!
