We have a new producer and new topics as we get ready for our fall 2013 season! The theme of this year’s October season will be Utopia/Dystopia where we look at how different people in our country imagine and then create their version of a Utopian world. Often their dream, once brought to life, had another side to it, brought about by virtue of the dream’s unintended consequences; one that could be characterized as Dystopian. Our topics were selected through a meeting with our Local Advisory Board and with the help of our past panelist network. Thanks to them all!
We have chosen the following topics for our fall season:
- 1941 BETTING ON HEDONISM – El Rancho Vegas, the first resort on the Las Vegas Strip is built
- 1957 PARADISE FOUND (AND LOST?) – Frommer’s “Europe on $5 a Day” is published
- 1906 HEAVEN FOR ALL – Pentecostalist Church begins with the Azusa Street Revival
- 1924 STRETCHING TO BLISS – The Great Oom starts first American Yoga Retreat in Nyack, NY
In the coming weeks we will be looking at our theme and announce our season’s panelists for each topic. We will also be suggesting books that will help you prepare for our discussions. If you have any suggestions for us about panelists, books or even audio for these topics, please let us know.
On another note, last year’s Action Speaks producer, Natalie Jablonski has taken a position with WXPR 91.7 FM Public Radio in Rhinelander, Wisconsin where she will be working with local residents helping them prepare news stories for the air. Natalie was a great addition to our Action Speaks family. We will miss her and wish her well. Luckily, we have found a new producer, Jacqueline Frole, a RISD graduate and a graphic designer. We welcome her to Action Speaks and are excited that she has agreed to work with us. We have been lucky to have a veritable ‘Hall of Fame’ of producers and expect Jacqueline to find her place in that pantheon.
