What is Action Speaks?
Action Speaks is a series of contemporary topic-driven panel discussions framed by the theme “Underappreciated Dates that Changed America.” The panels are recorded, edited, and rebroadcast on our presenting station WGBH 89.7 Boston, and other radio stations around the US. A corresponding documentary series based on these topics is broadcast on Rhode Island PBS on Mondays before the public forums.
For 17 years, Action Speaks has been committed to enhancing cultural life in Rhode Island’s capital by providing high-quality, intellectually unbiased discourse between scholars, artists, students, and citizens. In our fast-moving world, Action Speaks provides a venue for fellow citizens to engage in thoughtful discussions about history, culture, and current events. Action Speaks democratizes public dialogue by bringing people from all walks of life together to discuss the under-appreciated moments in our shared history. It is our hope that the Action Speaks program contributes to a more engaged and enlightened citizenry.
Does the audience get to participate in the show?

How do you choose the topics?
Our host and producer work with a team of scholars and advisers to identify potential dates that might make a compelling show. Through an extensive series of meetings and conversations, we work to choose dates that are little known but have contemporary relevance—all of which must fit together within a particular season’s theme! We also utilize our network of scholar-advisors to ensure we have a variety of voices on each panel.
Can I propose a topic?
Of course! We would love to hear from you. Send your ideas to info[at]actionspeaksradio[dot]org, and be sure to tell us why you think it’s an important – and
underappreciated – date in history.
I didn’t get a chance to ask my question at Action Speaks. What should I do?
We’re sorry to hear that! Next time, just walk right up. The good news is that you can start the conversation by leaving a comment at the bottom
of each show’s page. It’s not too late to get your thoughts out there!
